Première exposition personnelle en France du travail de l’artiste anglais Richard John Jones, « Everything Ending And Not » présente sous la forme d’une installation le film ‘All Closing And Dyke Bar And Everything Ending And Not And Death To The Ahistoric Vacuum’, réalisé en 2015 et qui a déjà été présenté en 2016 dans le cadre d’expositions à Amsterdam et à Londres.

Au cours de la dernière soirée avant fermeture dans le dernier bar lesbien de Münich, le film suit un groupe de personnages anonymes, qui jouent et rejouent des situations, ou partagent leurs réflexions sur leur environnement social et affectif. Viennent s’y mêler les histoires, nombreuses et souvent conflictuelles, de différents lieux gay et lesbiens de la ville qui ont fermé leurs portes les uns après les autres. Porté par le mouvement de ce qui semble être une prise unique, qui incorpore de multiples boucles et se termine exactement là où elle a commencé, le parcours du film insinue un doute quant au caractère final et définitif de cette « dernière soirée ».

Richard John Jones (b. 1986, Chesterfield, UK) vit et travaille à Marseille et Amsterdam. Au travers d’une pratique qui conjugue de multiples formes, il poursuit une investigation portant sur des lieux, organisations, structures ou histoires qui ont été effacés, oubliés ou annihilés, et expose le vide laissé par leur disparition. Jones utilise la technologie comme un moyen d’introduire de la fiction pour réactiver ces espaces et établir par là un rapport de réévalution réciproque entre le présent et le passé. Ses récents projets incluent ‘All Closing And Dyke Bar And Everything Endi ng And Not And Death To The Ahistoric Vacuum’ (2015), un film qui explore la possibilité de donner forme à la mémoire de lieux LGBT disparus et de contribuer par là à la réactualisation de nos conceptions de la sociabilité et de l’espace social.

Jones est diplômé du Sandberg Instituut et a été jusqu’en 2012 le co-directeur d’Auto Italia South East (Londres). Son travail a été présenté, en autres, au EYE Film Festival, Amsterdam, à Generation + Display, London, à SPACE, Londres, à la Biennale de Gwangju. Parallèlement à sa pratique individuelle, il collabore régulièrement avec d’autres artistes comme AA Bronson, Elise Carron, Natsuko Uchino, Huw Lemmey, Michael Oswell et bien d’autres.

For the first solo show in France of british artist Richard John Jones, « Everything Ending And Not » consists in an installation display of the film ‘All Closing And Dyke Bar And Everything Ending And Not And Death To The Ahistoric Vacuum’. Completed in 2015, the film has been exhibited in Amsterdam and London in 2016.

Taking place on the last night at the last lesbian bar in Munich, the film follows a group of anonymous characters enacting, reenacting or reflecting upon their surroundings and the many, often conflicting stories of the various closed down lesbian and gay spaces in the city. In what seems like a single take that ends exactly where it starts and incorporating many smaller loops within the film’s journey, the status of the ‘last night’ as one of finality becomes more ambiguous.

Richard John Jones (b. 1986, Chesterfield, UK) lives and works in Marseille and Amsterdam. His practice examines places, structures or histories that have been erased, forgotten or annihilated, and exposes the vacuum that they have left behind. Jones uses technology as a means to create room for fiction and revival, thereby continually evaluating the present in relation to the past. Recent projects include ‘All Closing And Dyke Bar And Everything Ending And Not And Death To The Ahistoric Vacuum’ (2015), a film exploring how lost LGBT spaces can be remembered but also how ideas of sociality and social space need to be updated. 

Jones is a graduate of the Sandberg Instituut and until 2012 was a Co-Director of Auto Italia South East. His work has been shown at EYE Film Festival, Amsterdam; Generation + Display, London; Rond Point Project Room, Marseille, SPACE, London, Gwangju Biennial, Korea amongst others. He works as a solo artist, and in collaboration with AA Bronson, Elise Carron, Natsuko Uchino, Huw Lemmey, Michael Oswell and many others.
