Livre-enquête relevant autant du collage que de l’expérimentation, cet ouvrage croise deux histoires et deux destins peu communs : celui d’une édition pirate du Traité du style d’Aragon, publié initialement en 1928 chez Gallimard et épuisé depuis longtemps lorsqu’un tirage illégal de ce texte est publié entraînant procès pour recel de contrefaçon et violation de la propriété intellectuelle ; de l’autre côté, des archives relatives aux duplications et reproductions de la “Fontaine” de Duchamp, récoltées et compilées dans les Fountain archives par l’artiste Sâadane Afif depuis 2008. En empruntant de la documentation, reproduite et juxtaposée, relative à ces deux «affaires» autour de la notion d’art, de légitimité / réappropriation, de propriété intellectuelle et de reprodution / falsification, l’auteur créé ainsi un meta-livre tout à la fois œuvre à part entière; commentaire érudit et ironique et nouveau degré de lecture autour de ces thèmes. Réalisé par le plasticien Philippe Munda, ce livre parodie et «emprunte» malicieusement la maquette des publication NRF.

The Story of a (Real) Fake, Philippe Munda
An investigation drawn as much from collage as from trial-and-error inquiry, The Story of a (Real) Fake is a cross between two stories with very different outcomes. The first — a pirated edition of Aragon’s Treaty of Style, originally published in 1928 by Gallimard and long since out-of-print when Allia Editions began reprinting illegal copies of the text at the end of the 1970s, provoked a lawsuit for counterfeiting and violation of intellectual property; the second — archives related to duplications and reproductions of Duchamp’s Fountain, found and compiled in artist Sâadane Afif ’s The Fountain Archives since 2008. By borrowing, reproducing, and juxtaposing documentation of these two “case-studies” on notions of art, legitimacy, appropriation, intellectual property, and reproduction/falsification, the author thus creates a meta-text that is both a work in and of itself as well as an erudite and ironic commentary offering new methods of (reading into) thematic exploration. Composed by artist Philippe Munda, The story of a (real) fake borrows and thereby parodies the literary tradition of the Nouvelle Revue Française.
